Multiphase Flows

Direct numerical simulation of bubbly flow in a vertical channel.

The research activities of the multi-phase flow team at IKFT focus on the development and application of numerical methods and computer codes for detailed simulation of flow, heat and mass transport and chemical reactions in multi-phase systems. The respective numerical studies with the in-house code TURBIT-VOF and OpenFOAM aim on the fundamental understanding of the relevant processes and their intrinsic coupling, and on the development and validation of improved physico-chemical mathematical models and their utilization for the accelerated development and optimization of advanced chemical reactors and processes, e.g. in monolithic structures and solid sponges.

The multi-phase flow team at IKFT is closely cooperating with the Institute for Chemical Technology and Polymer Chemistry at Campus South of KIT.
