Personal details

Gabriele Wiegand studied chemistry at University Karlsruhe (TH) and received her PhD there in 1993 in Physical Chemistry. From 1993 to 1994, she worked as a Junior Scientist at KIT (Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH at that time) in the project “Oxidation of Hazardous Waste in Supercritical Water”. From 1994 to 1997, she was delegated from KIT to ETH Zürich as Feodor-Lynen-Follow with co-funding by the Swiss National Science Foundation working in the Geochemistry Group on the subject “Solubility of Metal Chlorids in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide”. In 1998, she returned to KIT (Research Center Karlsruhe at that time) as head of the group “Reaction Kinetics and Substance Data” up to now.
Aside, from 2005 to 2010, she was responsible for health and safety issues the Large-Scale Project bioliq. In 2009, she finished the education as Health and Safety Officer.
Since 2014, she is elected member of the Staff Council and mainly active in the boards concerning personnel, health and safety, and editorial office.

  • Feodor-Lynen Fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Association

Teaching

From 2000 to 2008, she had a teaching assignment at Fachhochschule Offenburg in the Department “Process and Environmental Engineering” for the lecture “Chemical Technology” and was member of the Examination Board.

Research

  • She has been working in several research and technology transfer projects with the focus on solubility and kinetic measurements in high pressure high temperature systems, e.g.
  • high pressure phase equilibria in reactive systems,
  •  thermodynamic investigations for the quantifications of phase behavior for reactions in supercritical fluids,
  •  kinetic investigations of the cyclo-trimerisation of mono-substituted acetylenes in supercritical CO2 (DFG Grant WI 1893/1-2),
  •  NIR spectroscopy in supercritical CO2, Raman spectroscopy and thermal lense measurements in supercritical water,
  • investigation of thermophysical properties of hydrothermal phases with relevance for the utilization in geothermal energy and CO2 deep storage.

From these research activities, different technology transfer and EU projects emerged:

  • Successful development of a market-ready NIR inline monitoring device SINASCO (for monitoring of processes in supercritical CO2, together with SITEC Sieber Engineering AG, Switzerland), which has been applied in different other industrial collaborations.
  • Starting in 2010, an online sampling system for automated analysis of hydrothermal phases with high salinity has been developed (partly together with Deutsche Metrohm AG in a technology transfer project).
  • Application within the EU Projects MUSTANG (2009-2012, Grant Agreement 227286) and TRUST (2012-2017, Grant Agreement 309067), both within the 7th EU Framework Programme.
